2nd blog

This week’s class was brilliant. I am amazed with the technology we have, in this case the SMARTBOARD. I’m just amazed with it that I couldn’t care less of things happening around the class. I am also happy with the way the class was handled that day. As we were introduced to the board before the day’s session, I doubted whether all of us would get the change to at least touch the board. But I was wrong. I feel that every one of us had the change. The introduction section carried out by En. Ahmad was well organized. It was like taking baby steps with a well – skilled father. I have to admit that I was just over – excited when I saw that the software was actually already in our computer and we could do somewhat the same thing by using the mouse instead of our fingers. So, while En. Ahmad was briefing us I had the change to do the same thing on the computer but of course by using the mouse. It was fun being able to do what was being taught step by step. And the best part was yet to come when we were given the change to use the board by ourselves in smaller groups. I think I sound like a child by now.

If I felt so excited, I am sure the children in school will be as excited or more. I feel that this board make teaching much more fun and learning much more enjoyable. This board can help the teacher to create a positive environment and help to keep pupils attention much more longer that a well-planned lesson can keep. The use of colours, pictures and other eye-catching items is sure to be very useful in a primary classroom. One particular aspect of the software that interests me is the use of the graphics section. There are pictures that are associated with fair tales and this would be like telling a story using a “big book”. The teacher does not need to hold a book to tell the story but just work the magic of her fingers.

Another plus point of using the board is that the lesson for the day can be planned and saved in advance. This is for sure to save the teachers’ time. The organization of the lesson can also be more accurate as the teacher is just a touch away from the file need. And the best part is that when the teacher wants to remind pupils of the previous lesson she can just retrieve the particular file is it was saved. Another interesting aspect is the idea of incorporating the Internet into the lesson is beneficial as the teacher can just click and search for sites that can help out in the teaching process.

However, I feel that there is still learning to be done. We still need to know what are the suitable lessons that can be used with the board. I feel that the assignment will help us a lot in understanding the board much better. I also feel that when planning the lesson it is better to make it flexible so that it can be used in an ordinary classroom. It would be a long time before we could see this expensive board in every Malaysian classroom.

What I learnt…
This week I basically got to know the Smartboard much better. I learnt the icons that are found on the Notebook toolbar like the icon to add new page, the creative pen tool and etc. I feel that these are the basic stuff that after using for some time one will get use to.
What I question…
I am wondering about what are the lessons can be plan using this software? How do I make use of it? What we learnt are just the basic, will I be able to cope up with the lesson once it goes further? Well like last week I still feel it’s to early for me to find the answers for these questions.
